5 Tips to Keep Your Carpet Clean and New

Tips to Keep Your-Carpet CleanCarpets are a big investment that you want to last as long as possible.  They have a big impact on the look of a room and therefore ensuring they stay clean and in the best condition is important.  While there is no doubt that a periodic visit from a carpet cleaning specialist in Newcastle is a wise move, there are also some steps that you can take to keep your carpets in top condition yourself.  Here are five to get you started.

  1. Action spill immediately

Spills are a part of life that no matter how hard we try, we cannot avoid.  Dealing with spills should be an all-action thing – jump up and set to it immediately!  This might sound funny but the fact is, the quicker you deal with a spill, the less likely it is to leave a lasting mark on the carpet.  This is because the fibres in the carpet are naturally absorbent and will allow the liquid to soak in.  If this is something like chocolate milk or wine, then it will leave a nasty stain.  So grab that paper towel and dab the stain immediately – don’t rub it though, as this will make things worse.

  1. Use the right carpet cleaner

There are loads of carpet cleaner products on the market as well as plenty of homemade solutions to deal with stains and spills.  However, always ensure that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to clean your carpet and some products are designed for some types of carpet and not for others.  And if you use the wrong product against the instructions, you can invalidate the warranty on the carpet so if a problem does occur, you won’t be able to claim for a replacement.

  1. Test products in a corner

Even if a product is recommended for your carpet, it never hurts to be a little cautious and therefore, try products in a corner or behind the sofa on the first use.  That way, if something does go wrong it is limited to a small spot, out of eye-sight and doesn’t spoil the look of the whole room.

  1. The vacuum cleaner is your friend

In order to keep carpets looking clean and new, the vacuum cleaner is your friend.  Regular vacuuming has the effect of lifting dirt and dust from the carpet, keeping it in top condition and looking at its best.  It also helps if anyone has dust allergies as the dust can gather in the carpet but a pass over with the vacuum cleaner and it will be gone.

  1. Keep water to a minimum

Whether you are giving the carpet a clean or dealing with a spill, always keep the water involved to a minimum.  With its complicated construction and backing materials, carpet takes a long time to dry and if it stays wet, there is always a chance that mould or other nasty stuff could grow.  Only use the barest amount of water to do the job and dab up as much as possible quickly.
